Do Tankless Water Heaters Have a Standing Pilot?

Last updated 4 years ago

In spite of their compact size and superior efficiency, tankless water heaters are very mechanically similar to conventional tank systems. Traditional gas water heaters use a continuous pilot flame to heat water, resulting in standby energy losses when the water is not in use.

Some tankless systems also use a standing pilot flame, but this configuration mitigates the energy savings since they still use energy to heat unused water. More advanced tankless systems from Rinnai and other manufacturers use a direct-spark electric ignition which only ignites the pilot light when you need it—similar to the device found in gas-range ovens.
